Sunday Jan. 28 at 6:06 pm Berwick and District Firefighters were called to an electrical fire at the Needs Gas Bar at 174 Commercial St. in Berwick. Workers at the store smelt a strong smell of smoke and called 911 for assistance. Once Firefighters arrived at the scene they found that one of the main electrical panels had malfunctioned causing the room to fill with smoke. Firefighters used exhaust fans to clear the building of smoke. The power was isolated and firefighters returned to the station at 6:50pm. There was no injuries or property damage reported.
Feb. 12 at 07:43 am Berwick and District Fire Department were called to 180 Cottage St. in Berwick for a alarm sounding. When firefighters arrived there was no one home so had to gain access to the home to confirm there was no fire. There was no fire and it was found to be a faulty alarm. The homeowner was contacted and fire units returned at 7:56am.
Feb. 13 at 12:43, Berwick was called to a possible car fire on the Hall Rd. South of Berwick. When firefighters arrived the found that there was no fire but a car had left the road and struck a tree. The lone occupant of the vehicle was in a nearby house uninjured. First responders checked the driver for injuries while firefighters worked to open the hood to cut the battery cables to prevent any source of spark which could cause a fire. Fire police assisted RCMP with traffic control and had the road open to two lanes by 1:12 pm when fire units returned to the station.
Sunday Feb. 25 at 9:47 am Berwick and District Fire Department responded to a two vehicle accident near 3380 highway 221 north of Berwick. When Berwick arrived they called for assistance from Aylesford Fire to provide their rescue unit with Jaws of life. Two vehicles had collided head on and the roads were snow covered at the time of the accident. Berwick worked to free a person trapped in one car while Aylesford assisted Berwick with one trapped in the second vehicle. Two people were transported to Valley Regional and the third was air lifted to Halifax. Fire units were freed from the scene at 11:11am and Fire Police remained to assist RCMP with traffic control. The highway was opened to traffic at 11:35.
As they were released form the accident scene Berwick received a call for medical assist at 38 Hiltz Rd. in Garland north of Berwick. Firefighters were on the scene for a short period to assist paramedics.
Monday February 26 at 6:43 pm The Berwick and District Fire Department were called out to a chimney fire at 89 Prospect Rd. in Morristown. When firefighters arrived there was no fire showing. Fire crews cleaned the chimney and returned to the station by 7:35 pm.
Tuesday February 27 at 11:34 am Berwick was called to a residential fire alarm sounding at 154 Union St. in Berwick. At 11:37 a cancellation page was sent to all firefighters as it was a false alarm. The Chief was on the scene and reported the alarm was caused by over coked on the stove.
Friday March 09 at 3:40 Berwick and District Fire Department were called out for an alarm sounding at 236 Commercial St. in Berwick. Before trucks responded fire fighters received a cancellation page from the occupants of the building.
Reminder to everyone that if you did not change the battery in your smoke detector this past weekend when you set your clocks ahead. Now is the perfect time to do it. Smoke detectors do save lives!
The Berwick and District Fire Department responded to only one call this week. On Friday, March 16 at 4:12 am they were called out for a power pole on fire near the intersection of highway 221 and 360 in Somerset. When fire units arrived they found the pole was on fire and had burned most the way through. Firemen rerouted traffic in the area and called Nova Scotia Power. A power crew arrived at 5:17 and firefighters were released to return to the station.

Valley fire departments had a very busy weekend. Berwick responded to seven alarms in the past two days. The first being Saturday March 31 at 10:48am a mutual aid call to Aylesford for a garage fire at 1050 Station Rd. in Aylesford. Berwick provided a tanker and was at the scene until 11:25am.
Later this same day at 1:24pm Berwick once again was called to Aylesford to assist at a grass fire at 7486 Aylesford Rd. Berwick remained at this scene until 2:30pm. At 5:50pm They were called to send a tanker truck to stand in at Greenwich Fire Station while many eastern valley fire departments responded to a hay fire in the Hantsport area. Berwick remained at the Greenwich station until 9:15pm.
Sunday April 01 at 10:48 Berwick and District firefighters were called to provide a Rescue for stand in coverage at Kentville Fire Station. Kentville were responding to a house fire at 136 Horton Cross Rd. in the Wolfville area. Then at 11:17am Berwick was called to a brush fire on Barley St. in Garland , north of Berwick. When fire units arrived the homeowner had the fire under control. As Berwick was returning to their station they received a call to sent their tanker to the house fire on the Horton Cross Rd. All Berwick units returned by 3:00pm. At 3:05pm Berwick was paged out to send manpower to a woods fire at 1302 Black Hole Rd. in Glenmont north of Canning. A Berwick firefighter was pined by a tree that they were cutting, firefighters from Berwick worked to free the injured firefighter. He was taken to Valley Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries.Berwick was also requested to send a tanker to Waterville Fire for stand in coverage. Why Berwick was doing standby coverage at Waterville they responded to a grass fire on Highway #1 in Cambridge.
At 5:21pm Berwick was again called to provide a tanker to respond to the scene of a brush fire at 2699 Prospect Rd. South of Waterville. Berwick remained at the scene until 6:15 at which time they returned to their station.
April 17 at 10:35 am Berwick and District Fire Department were called to Aylesford to provide stand in at their station why Aylesford attended to a call in their area. Berwick was released at 11:30am.
April 23 at 2:40pm Berwick were called to assist Waterville at a brush fire at 225 Carolina Ave in Cambridge. Berwick sent a tanker to the scene and a pumper to stand in at Waterville’s station. Why Berwick was standing in at Waterville they got a call to resound to a grass fire and downed power lines on Cambridge Mountain Rd. The power lines were struck by a truck causing the grass fire. Berwick was released from Waterville at 4:08pm.
April 28 at 12:41am Berwick responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of 360 highway and Parker Condon Rd just north of Berwick. One person was transported to Valley Regional Hospital. The occupant from the second car was not at the scene when firefighters arrived. RCMP were on hand with their dog to assist in finding the person. Firefighters searched the area and were unable to find anyone. Firefighters controlled traffic and helped clean the intersection of debris before being released from the scene at 1:55am.
May 05 at 7:10 pm Berwick and District Fire Department were called to a MVC at 394 Windermere Rd., just past the Hall Rd. Intersection. When firefighters arrived they found the driver was out of the vehicle . Firefighters provided medical assistance until Emergency Health Services arrived at the scene. Fire Police assisted RCMP with traffic control. All units were cleared from the scene at 7:38pm.
Tuesday May 08 at 5:38 pm Berwick and District Fire Department received a call for a brush fire at 573 Windermere Rd. In South Berwick. When firefighters arrived they found that a large area behind a home was burning up the trees. The fire came in contact with a large barn, Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire at the area of the barn then went to work controlling the remainder of the fire. A wood pile was destroyed in the fire. Waterville was called to provide a stand in truck at the Berwick station. Units were released from the fire scene at 19:07. While members were starting to clean up from this fire they received a call from Waterville to attend a woods fire in Chipman Brook , near Black Rock. Berwick sent units to the scene and were there until 10:05 at which time they returned to Berwick.
May 11 at 03:47 am Berwick Fire received a call for assistance from Waterville as they were responding to a house fore in Cambridge. Berwick sent a pumper to the Waterville station for stand in coverage and a tanker and rescue to the scene. Berwick was oat the scene until 6:40 am.
May 18 at 11:17 pm Berwick and District Fire Department were called to Waterville to provide a pumper for stand in coverage at their station as Waterville responded to a structure fire in New Minas. Berwick returned to their station at 12:42am.
May 19 at 2:12am Berwick again responded to Waterville for a warehouse fire on Maple and Mill St. Berwick provided a pumper, tankers and their rescue unit to the scene. Berwick was at the scene until 7:50am.
June 29 at 8:15am Berwick and District Fire Department responded to a smoke alarm sounding at the Somerset School north of Berwick. When firefighters arrived they found that the stove in the kitchen was cause for the alarm to sound. There were no students attending school and once firefighters determined the area safe they returned to the station.
Saturday June 30 at 12:57pm Berwick responded mutual aid to Waterville fire who were responding to a barn fire on highway #1 in Waterville. Berwick provided a Tanker and rescue unit to the fire scene. Fire Police closed highway # 1 from the Bond Rd to the Rafuse Rd for two hours. Berwick was released from the scene at 2:42pm
August 15 at 11:49am Berwick and District Fire Department were called out to a single vehicle accident on Highway #1 west of Berwick. Upon arrival they found the single vehicle was on its roof in the oncoming lane . The two occupants of the car were uninjured. Fire fighters assisted with traffic and clean up. Fire units cleared the scene at 1:00 pm.
August 18 at 11:55am Berwick received a call for a flooded basement at 2 Autumn Drive in Berwick. Firefighters pumped water from the basement and assisted the homeowner with clean up. Firefighters were cleared from the call at 1:00pm.
The Berwick and District Fire department answered three calls in the past week. Friday, August 24 at 10:00 am. they responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of highway #1 and the Windermere Rd. in South Berwick. As firefighters arrived they found that a single vehicle had left the road and was lying on its side against a utility pole. There were no injuries, fire, police and paramedics were only on the scene for a short time.
Later this same day at 2:00 PM. Berwick was called for mutual aid to Aylesford for a house fire at 633 Victoria Mountain Rd. north of Aylesford. There were no injuries as a result of the fire however the home was a total loss. Berwick was at the scene until 3:30 PM.
On Sunday August 26 at 5:43 PM. Berwick responded to a residential alarm sounding on Cottage St. in Berwick. It was found to be a faulty alarm sensor. Fire fighters were at the scene until 6:48 PM.
Sunday September 23 at 4:20 AM Berwick and District Fire Department were called out to a house fire at 3531 Brooklyn St. in Weston. As firefighters arrived they were met by a neighbor telling them that the home owner was out and the fire was in the basement. Smoke was coming from within the home. The fire was attacked from an out side entrance to the basement and brought under control very quickly. Waterville and Aylesford fire departments were called to send pumpers and tankers to the scene. Berwick remained at the scene until 6:30. The cause of the fire is unknown and fire Marshal was called to investigate the cause
Oct. 14th at 12:57 PM, Berwick and District Fire Department responded to a alarm sounding at 3646 Highway #1 in Berwick West. As Fire units were responding they received a call telling them that their was no fire at the home. The home owner was home and the furnace caused the alarm to sound. One fire unit continued to the scene to check to make sure things were safe.
Tuesday Oct. 23 at 9:55 PM Berwick and District Fire Department were called out for a tree on power lines near the intersection of Cottage and Maple St. in Berwick. As firefighters arrived they found that the tree had fallen across the road and ripped the power line away from the main line. Fire officials called Berwick Electric and Public works for assistance. Firefighters turned the scene over to the electric commission when they arrived. Later at 12:35 AM Firefighters were called to 182 Pleasant Valley Rd. for another tree that had fallen on power lines. It was determined that it was phone and cable lines. Department of transport were called to clear the road and provide traffic assistance. Fire crews returned to the station at 12:55. As they were closing down from this call they were called back to the first call on Cottage and Maple St. The tree that had fallen earlier in the evening was split in the center and was a public safety issue. The tree had to be cut down and fire crews provided lighting for the area. The tree was removed and power restored by 4:18 AM at which time fire crews called it a day.
Thursday Oct. 25 at 12:37 AM Berwick responded to 28 Lawrence Rd. in South Berwick for a smoke condition. The home owner reported the lights were flickering and smoke detector was sounding with intermitting beeps. Firefighters checked the home and found a faulty ceiling light. Once the home was determined safe the firefighters returned to the station at 1:42 AM.
Firefighters are busy this week preparing for the Pancake Breakfast hosted by Valley Emergency Services (Berwick Fire, RCMP, and EHS) and sponsored by Price Choppers. The breakfast is being held at the fire station this Saturday Nov. 03 from 08:00 - 11:00. The breakfast is a free will offering with all proceeds going to the local Christmas Daddies. Weekly Fire report
Oct.31 at 8:38PM Berwick and District Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire at the Berwick School. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and returned to the station. At 8:56Pm they were called to 3959 Highway # 1 in Berwick West to a single vehicle accident. The car left the road and hit a small tree. There were only minor injuries and fire crews were at the scene until 9:20. They were called out again at 12:21AM for tires and wooden pallets on fire in the road near 4190 Highway # 1 in Berwick West. The fire was extinguished and the mess cleared from the road. Fire unite were back at the station at 1:03 AM.
Nov.02 at 3:25PM Berwick was called to provide a tanker to a brush fire at 1525 South Bishop Rd. in Coldbrook. Berwick remained at the scene until 4:47PM.
Nov. 03 at 9:46 AM Berwick responded to a alarm sounding at 116 Union St. in Berwick . Fire units were cancelled before they made it to the address. It was a false alarm and Dispatch was contacted by the homeowner.
Nov. 04 at 7:05AM Berwick responded to 195 Prospect Rd. for a tree on power lines. When Firefighters arrived they found a very large tree across the road . The phone and cable lines were down but no power lines were involved. Department of Transport arrived shortly after and began clean up of the area. Fire units returned to the station at 7:33AM.
At 8:46 AM they were called to 138 Taylor Rd. For power lines against the trees causing fire. Firefighters went to the location. Nova Scotia Power were notified and fire units returned to the station.
Later this day at 8:35PM Berwick responded to 75 Lawrence Rd. in South Berwick for a smoke condition. When firefighters arrived they found a house full of smoke. The house was ventilated and the cause of the smoke was the woodstove. Once the house was cleared of smoke and the home determined safe firefighters returned to the station.
Berwick Fire Fighters along with RCMP, EHS and Price Chopper staff would like to thank all who attended the pancake breakfast this past Saturday morning. $1387.00 was raised at the event. This money will be presented to the local Mommies and Daddies Christmas fundraiser in Nov.
Wed. March 26 at 10:00pm Berwick and District Firefighters responded to a single vehicle MVC near 3381 Highway 221 in Weston. When firefighters arrived there was no one in the vehicle that had struck a utility pole and rolled several times. Firefighters used a thermal image camera to determine the number of occupants in the vehicle and searched the area for the driver being the only person in the car at the time of the incident. The driver returned to the scene a short wile after fire crews arrived. The driver received minor injuries. EHS and RCMP assisted. Fire units were at the scene for 30 minutes.
